Diplomatic relations and cooperation between the Republic of Suriname and the People’s Republic of China
The People’s Republic of China and the Republic of Suriname formally established diplomatic relations on May 28th 1976. In May 1977, the PRC opened its Embassy in Paramaribo, Suriname. The Republic of Suriname reciprocated by opening its Beijing Embassy in January of 1998.
In May 2021 the Embassy celebrated the 45th Anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Republic of Suriname and the People’s Republic of China. (MBIBIS News Report)
Chinese Immigration to the Republic of Suriname commenced around 167 years ago, and eventually resulted in the current capacity of the country with the largest Chinese population in the Caribbean. Nowadays the Chinese people and Chinese culture are playing an important role in the blended multi ethnic society of the Republic of Suriname. Suriname is the first country in the Western Hemisphere to designate the Spring Festival as a public holiday.
Meanwhile high level visits, economic cooperation, cultural partnerships, and bilateral people to people engagements are at the heart of the ongoing bilateral relation
Both countries supported each other by all means possible during the Pandemic.
The principle of equity in size is important for maintaining friendship and cooperation. The one China Policy and the Principle of Non Interference are indispensable for sound cooperation Respect, trust, mutual beneficial cooperation and a common cause to do better for the sake of our Peoples are nurturing the bilateral ties of friendship and people oriented cooperation.
In May 2018, Suriname signed the Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation within the framework of the Belt and Road Initiative. In November 2019, the two countries signed the Belt and Road cooperation plan.
The bilateral cooperation between the Republic of Suriname and the People’s Republic of China is marked by numerous tangible results in trade, investment and economic cooperation which brought our countries and People steadily closer to each other.
